Why did God let bad things happen to the good person?

“Why does God let bad things happen to good people?”  Have you ever heard anyone ask that question?  Perhaps you have asked it.  We know that God is just and yet we see good people undergoing bad experiences.  How could a just God allow this to happen? Read the rest of this entry

Is love always good?

The Bible says a lot about love.  We are told that God is love.  He has demonstrated his love by sending his son, Jesus Christ, to die as a sacrifice for our sins so we can be forgiven.

God requires that we love others as well.  Jesus said that the two greatest commands are to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  We are even commanded to love our enemies.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that all love is good.  Jesus has told us that loving him should have priority over all other loves.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Matthew 10:37

Samaritan’s Purse

Most of us, if we saw a man who had been attacked and robbed, would try to get help for him.  In the parable of the good Samaritan Jesus told about a man who did more than this.

Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’”
Luke 10:30-35

Born that way?

Some people are sexually attracted to members of their own sex.  There are different opinions about why this is true.  Some people believe this condition the result of their experiences but others believe it is has a genetic cause.  It is possible that different people are homosexuals for different reasons but the Bible gives us reason to believe that at least some people are gay because they were born that way. Why should we study the Bible?

Why should we study the Bible?  Second Timothy 3:16 gives us four reasons.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. Read the rest of this entry

The innkeeper

Nearly everyone is familiar with the parable of the good Samaritan, found in Luke 10:30-34.

It is a great mystery that though the human heart longs for Truth, in which alone it finds liberation and delight, the first reaction of human beings to Truth is one of hostility and fear! -Anthony de Mello
