Truth and love

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:8

These two statements show that both truth and love are part of God’s character.  We need to express both of them when telling others about God.

Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.

Ephesians 4:15

We must always speak the truth and what we say must be motivated by love.  But what will happen if we speak truth without love or try to practice love while ignoring truth?  We can find out by looking at two organizations in Topeka, Kansas, that do these things. Read the rest of this entry

The Euthyphro dilemma

Plato wrote of a conversation between Socrates and a man named Euthyphro in which this question was raised: Does God command us to do things because they are good or are they good because God commands them?   Many people feel that either answer creates a problem.  If God commands us to do things because they are good that implies that there is a standard of goodness independent of God to which he must conform.  If the things God commands are good because he commands them then good and evil exist only because of God’s arbitrary decision to call certain thing good and others evil.  This problem is known as the Euthyphro dilemma.

Joy to the World

There are many lists of the most popular Christmas carols.  The lists differ from each other but Joy to the World can be found on almost all of them.

This hymn shouldn’t be on any of these lists because it isn’t about Christmas at all.   It is about the future return of Christ.

You shall be careful therefore to do as the LORD your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
Deuteronomy 5:32

God doesn’t simply say we must obey but warns about turning to the right or to the left.  That is because there are two opposite ways in which we can disobey each command.

TANSTAAFL

TANSTAAFL – This stands for “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.” This phrase probably originated at a time when it was a common practice for saloons to offer free food to anyone who bought a drink. The food wasn’t really free because the price the saloons charged for the drinks was high enough to cover the cost.

This statement is true in many areas of life.  Things that we are told are free really aren’t; we are paying for them in ways that aren’t apparent to us.

Wash your feet before you eat

When we were young our parents stressed the importance of always washing our hands before we eat.  In the Bible it was customary for a host to offer his guests water so they could wash their feet before eating.

Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.”

So they said, “Do as you have said.”

Steps to national repentance

Leviticus 4 contains instructions for those who have sinned and want to be forgiven. There are four sections for four different classes of people. For anyone who wants to see his nation turn back to God this order is significant.

Church discipline

In 1 Corinthians 5:3-5 Paul gave instructions about how to deal with a member of the church who was living a sinful lifestyle and showed no inclination to repent of it.

For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. Gehazi

Elisha began as a servant to Elijah and later took his place as prophet after Elijah was taken up to heaven. He had a servant named Gehazi. It is possible that he was preparing Gehazi to eventually be his successor just as he had been Elijah’s successor. Read the rest of this entry

Salvation from God’s point of view

When we think or talk about salvation we usually mean the process of having our sins forgiven by repenting of them and putting our faith in Jesus Christ. From the human point of view this is what salvation is but from God’s viewpoint this is only one of several steps. The complete process is described in Romans 8:29,30:
