Authority

Nearly everyone has heard of the Sermon on the Mount found in chapters 5 to 7 of Matthew.  Those who heard it were surprised by the authority with which Jesus spoke.

And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.  (Matthew 7:28-29)

The scribes frequently cited other teachers as proof of the truth of their words.  Jesus didn’t do this but simply asserted that certain things were true.  Two times in the sermon he even claimed that he was God. Read the rest of this entry

Good cop/bad cop

Good cop/bad cop is a routine police sometimes us when interrogating suspects.  The bad cop is hostile toward the suspect.  The good cop is sympathetic and sometimes even restrains the bad cop.  The suspect comes to accept the good cop as his friend and sometimes will give him the information the police are looking for.

The suspect comes to think of the two cops as being opposed to each other and he naturally sides with the one who is friendlier to him.  In fact they are working together.  From the suspect’s point of view they are both bad cops because they are trying to get him to give them information they need.  From the point of view of law abiding citizens they are both good cops because they are trying to enforce the law and fight crime.
