Perhaps you have heard someone say something like this, “The Titanic was built by professionals but the ark was built by amateurs.” What they mean is that sometimes people without professional training or skills can do a better job than those who do have training.
But is the statement true? Was Noah just an amateur when God told him to build the ark? We really don’t know because the Bible tells us nothing of Noah’s occupation before the flood. It is possible that he was a professional shipbuilder and that God gave him this occupation to prepare him to build the ark.
Tim Chaffey and K. Marie Adams have written the Remnant Trilogy, a fictional account of Noah’s life before the flood, and they tell of Noah becoming an apprentice to a shipbuilder at the age of 40 and devoting his life to this job. When God finally told him to start working on the ark he was well prepared to carry out this task.
The Bible tells us very little about what life was like then, so naturally most of their work in fiction, but they are careful not to contradict anything the Bible actually says. At the end of each book of the trilogy there is a section in which they discuss what the Bible says.

And yet even if Noah was a professional there is a sense in which he and his family were amateurs. The word “amateur” is derived from the French word for “love”, meaning someone who engages in an activity because of love, not just because of what he can gain from it. All Christians should be amateurs in this sense. We should serve God because we love him, not just for the rewards we will receive.
The first eleven chapters of Genesis are the foundation on which the authority of the Bible rests. Ken Ham, the director of Answers in Genesis, has written a commentary on these chapters entitled Creation to Babel. In it he shows clearly that the earth was created is six days and is not millions of years old, that the flood in Noah’s time was worldwide, and that the building of the tower of Babel really happened. Here is a description of the book from the Answers in Genesis website.
There has never been a commentary like this one!
Dive deep into this foundational portion of Scripture with apologetics teaching as well as theological and devotional insights.
How was there light before the sun? What is “protoevangelium”? Are Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 different or contradictory accounts of creation? Ken Ham answers these questions (collected over four decades of speaking on Genesis)—and many more—in his unique commentary on Genesis 1–11. Combining apologetics teaching, doctrine, theology, and devotional insights, this commentary is a tool for the whole family to grow in their knowledge of God and his Word.
Creation to Babel: A Commentary for Families will equip families to stand on God’s Word, to understand why creation to Babel is such a foundational portion of Scripture, and to see what God reveals about himself in the early chapters of Genesis.

Answers in Genesis is an organization founded and led by Ken Ham that is dedicated to proving that the Bible’s account of creation recorded in Genesis is true and can be supported scientifically. It has aroused a great deal of controversy. It is strongly supported by many Bible believers. It is disliked by unbelievers who accept the popular idea that life evolved over millions of years and even by some Christians who also accept this belief. (For a long time I was in this group. I was a Christian but I also believed that the theory of evolution had been scientifically proven. If I had known of Answers in Genesis I would probably have believed that what it was teaching was false. In the last few years I have come to realized that in fact there is no evidence supporting evolution.) Read the rest of this entry

Colleges in darkness
by Ken Ham
What does “Dominus Illumina Tio Mea” mean on this building at one of the colleges in Oxford (Oxford University, England)? It’s actually the motto of the University of Oxford, which uses the opening words of Psalm 27, “The Lord is my light.” It appears on the university’s arms and has been used since the second half of the sixteenth century. But sadly, there’s very little light at Oxford University. Now there is mainly darkness, as the pernicious religion of atheistic evolution, as represented by their high priest Darwin, permeates the education system and the culture. There is a wide range of opinions on the subject of climate change. Some believe we are on the verge of an ecological catastrophe while others think climate change presents no danger at all. Some think our use of fossil fuels is the primary cause while others think that nothing we do has any effect on it.
A lot of people are concerned about changes in our physical climate, but how many care as much about our spiritual climate? I am 78 years old and in my lifetime I have seen drastic changes in the spiritual climate and they have not been for the better. Read the rest of this entry
There is a lot of news about transgender people in the media today. Most of the stories support the belief that some people are really of the opposite gender of the bodies they are born in and we need to support their decision to live as their “real” gender. Among other things this means they should be allowed to use the restrooms and dressing rooms of their choice and not be be limited to using the ones assigned to their physical gender. Anyone who objects is condemned as being transphobic.
Although we live in a culture which believes we should affirm transgenders by allowing them to live as they choose there are still some who disagree with this. Here are some sites that reject the popular views. Read the rest of this entry
On October 31 1517 Martin Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to the door of a church in Wittenburg, Germany. He claimed that the Church had departed from accepting the Bible as its sole authority and that many of the doctrines it taught were based on human traditions and opinions. This was the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
Today there is a new error that is causing many Christians to reject the Bible’s authority. Most people believe that the earth is millions of years old and that all life developed by a process of evolution. This belief is so pervasive that many Christians accept it and interpret the first 11 chapters of Genesis to accommodate it. Read the rest of this entry
How old is the earth? If you asked most scientists they would tell you it is 4.5 billion years old. If you asked a Christian who believes the creation account in Genesis is literally true he would tell you it is only a few thousand years old. Those who believe the earth is old claim that their view is supported by scientific evidence and that young earth creationists reject science. Our rejection of the belief that the earth is billions of years old isn’t based on science but on history. The Bible reveals that earth was created by God and later there was a worldwide flood which created the majority of the fossils that we find today. In a previous post I showed some of the scientific evidence which supports this belief.
From what I have written so far it appears that all Christians believe the earth is young while others believe it is old. Most of you are aware that this isn’t the case. There are Christians who believe the Bible and yet at the same time believe the earth is old and for a long time I was one of them. I have been a Christian for almost 60 years and for the first 50 of those years I believed the earth was billions of years old. I reconciled these beliefs by believing in the Gap Theory. Here is an article that explains what the gap theory is and why it is unbiblical. Read the rest of this entry
The organization Answers in Genesis is building a full sized replica of Noah’s ark. It is almost complete and is scheduled to be open to the public on July 7. You can learn more about it here: arkencounter.com. Christians need to pray that it will accomplish its objective of proving that the world wide flood described in the Bible actually took place. Here are some specific requests posted on the Answers in Genesis site. Read the rest of this entry
As many of you know, the organization Answers in Genesis is building a full size replica of Noah’s ark. The ark is almost completed and is scheduled to be open to visitors on July 7. You can learn the details at arkencounter.com.
Most people don’t believe a worldwide flood occurred. In his second letter Peter foretold this denial.
They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
2 Peter 3:4-6
Imagine that a scientist invents a time machine, travels back in time, and meets Adam and Eve just a few days after they are created. If he knew nothing of the Bible’s account of their origin he would assume they had been conceived, born, and grown to maturity just as other people have. If he tried to estimate their ages from their appearance he would conclude they were much older than they really were.
But suppose he noticed that they had no navels. Would he come to the correct conclusion that they had been specially created by God or would he stick to his belief that they had been born just as other humans are and try to find some other explanation for their lack of navels? The Bible tells us that the human race grew so wicked that God sent a worldwide flood to destroy it. He only found one righteous man, Noah, and he warned him to build an ark to save himself and his family from the flood. You can read the complete story here: Genesis 6-9
The Bible isn’t the only record of this flood. Other cultures all over the world have legends of a worldwide flood in which only a few humans were saved to repopulate the world. This article contains a list of some of these legends: Flood Legends From Around the World Read the rest of this entry
The Bible tells us that God created the earth in six days. Many scientists who have studied the earth and tried to measure its age have reached the conclusion that is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Most people accept the second view as being correct; they believe that scientists examine the evidence with an open mind and believe only those things which have been proven.
The late Carl Sagan wrote many books proving that the present state of the earth and the rest of the universe is the result of processes that took billions of years. He helped to produce a television series called Cosmos that was broadcast in 1980 and claimed to show how the universe developed.
Imagine that you are a physician on a hospital staff and another doctor at the hospital discovers a procedure that dramatically reduces the death rate of its patients. Wouldn’t you and the other doctors at the hospital eagerly adopt the procedure and practice it yourselves? The answer is so obvious to most people that it seems stupid to even ask such a question. But a doctor name Ignaz Semmelweis did discover such a process and the other doctors rejected it. Here is Wikipedia’s description of what happened.
