Story time for the Christians-

Today I was at the nail salon getting this shellack removed. I tried to do it on my own, but I’m not skilled enough apparently. Anyway, I’m there listening to “Practical Religion” by Ryle and not talking to anyone and realize what a hypocrite I am. I’m filling my head and heart with scripture and beautiful truths of the faith literally surrounded by a group of people that are most likely Buddhists and are without hope unless they come to know Him. So, I press ‘pause’ on my earbuds and begin to think about how to begin a conversation about the Lord.

Just then I noticed that the woman in front of me— the lady that’s seen me the three times I’ve ever been— has on two cross necklaces. I looked at her and said, “Kim, do you wear those because you’re a Christian?” She quickly responded, “I’m a baptist.” I was not expecting that answer. I said, “A Baptist?” She said, “Yes.” I said, “Really?” She chuckled and said, “Yes, really.” I said, “Where do you go to church?” She said, “Well, I was going to Red Lick Baptist.” “Really??” I asked again, before I realized I probably sounded like I was interrogating her at this point. She asked me if she could tell me the story of how she came to believe that Jesus was God. “Please do!” I said.

Her family had always been Buddhist. Her grandparents, parents, and her. She told me that she was still school age at the time that changes for her and her household. There was a concert going on three miles from her home. Her siblings and friends were going by bike.

On their way, they passed a cemetery and her brother asked them to stop. She thought that was really weird and also wanted to go to the concert so everyone refused, but he went anyway. They went ahead to the concert and all got home around 1am. Later that night he woke her up because he was calling her for her. He was shaking uncontrollably and couldn’t get warm. She said they each had bamboo beds back then— this was in Vietnam in the 80’s— and they put heat under his bed to keep him warm but to no avail. Eventually they brought him to a hospital.

For three days, he spat at, peed on, and was totally crazy to everyone he came into contact with. The hospital rooms there had 8 beds each but his had to be emptied because he was a threat to the other patients. A woman and her son came in, and the mother told Kim’s mom she could help her son. She went to him and put her hand on his forehead and prayed that he would be delivered from whatever this was. The rest of that day she spoke with them about Jesus and how He was the only Savior. The next morning, her brother woke up totally in his right mind. From then forward, Kim, her brother, and mother believed that Jesus was in fact God. They were never able to find the woman and son after that day, and they searched high and low.

I was just amazed at this story. What a coward I’d have been and what I would’ve missed out on had I kept my earbuds in and ignored the tugging at my own heart. I’m so thankful I got to hear it and can now it pass it to you guys. Please say a prayer for Kim and her family. She’s not been attending lately. I’d like to talk to her more and am going to invite her to our church. I mentioned it casually, but we weren’t able to talk as long as I’d hoped. Thank you!

  1. Thanks for the post. What a wonderful and encouraging story. For me it is often fear that prevents us from stepping out with courage to pray for others with a heart that loves because the devil is very good at making us self conscious. Blessings.

  3. Excellent! I think a prayer for an open door to witness is one of the prayers that get answered the fastest. I can imagine God is waiting, poised to spring those opportunities on us the moment we ask. But do we ask?
Thanks for a great story. I’m going to ask Him to open the door for me to share the gospel before this day is over. 😉
