Afflictions

Here is something I read on Facebook.

Afflictions

by Joshua Arnold

Many times the Lord will bring about afflictions on a person that last longer than what any natural motive, encouragement or comfort may provide for enduring that particular affliction.

Some people have a very tough and stubborn personality or natural disposition, and so they tend to endure afflictions longer and with greater courage and ease than most people do.

These people may be able to sustain themselves and endure afflictions by thinking back and cleaving to certain memories they have of their enduring and overcoming some affliction in the past that is similar to the affliction they are enduring now, and this is enough to refresh and carry them through. “I’ve been through this before, I can do it again” may be their food and drink that strengthens them for the time being.

But when the gracious LORD pleases, He intentionally afflicts the person much longer and to a greater degree than ever before. Now the person is perplexed, as they cannot say to themselves “I’ve been through this before, I can get through it again”. They have no former triumphant experience to grab hold of, no arm of the flesh to lean on.

And the LORD does this so that all of their natural encouragements and comforts that they usually lean on are shown to be failures, so that all the person is left with is the bare word of God to depend on. This is when faith is most pure and most exercised. This is when faith stands alone on its native legs without any brace or crutch, apart from any natural means of carrying the soul through affliction, and God is most glorified as He is shown to be sufficient for what natural means and helps were not sufficient for. God graciously gives us a glimpse of the blessed truth that it is only when we are weak that we are truly strong in Him (2 Cor 12:10)

This is the true meaning of “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Anyone waiting humbly in this position now may have the comfort of knowing that they have never been in a better position to glorify God, and they have never been closer to being lifted up (Matthew 23:12).
