Post-apocalyptic fiction or post-apocalyptic fact
There is a literary genre called post-apocalyptic fiction. It depicts a future in which civilization has been destroyed by a war or some other catastrophe and the survivors are attempting to cope with the changed environment. Most people have heard of post-apocalyptic fiction but not many realize there is also a class of literature that is post-apocalyptic fact.
Post-apocalyptic means after the apocalypse. If you look up the word apocalypse in a dictionary you will find that it has more than one meaning. Here is one definition, from the site yourdictionary.com: “an event that causes a tremendous amount of damage, perhaps even so much damage that the world ends.” This is probably the meaning that comes to mind for most people when they hear the word.
The original meaning of the word is to reveal something that was previously unknown. In some translations of the Bible the last book is called Apocalypse rather than Revelation. The two words mean exactly the same thing. Since much of Revelation consists of events that will cause great damage it is easy to see how the other definition could have come into being.
The last two chapters of Revelation describe the conditions that will exist after the rest of the prophecies have been fulfilled and will continue for all eternity. This is the only writing that can truthfully be called post-apocalyptic fact. It is completely different from any fictional accounts.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Not everyone will enjoy the new heaven and the new earth.
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.
Post-apocalyptic fiction provides pleasure to those who like it. Post-apocalyptic fact tells us how the world will end so we can be ready for it.
