The shortest chapter in the Bible

The shortest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 117.

Praise the LORD, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.
Praise the LORD!
Psalm 117

It is sandwiched in between two well known psalms of thanksgiving and praise and readers often don’t pay much attention to it.

The apostle Paul paid attention to it.  He even quoted it in his letter to the Romans.

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
and sing to your name.”

And again it is said,
“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

And again,
“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him.”

And again Isaiah says,
“The root of Jesse will come,
even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
in him will the Gentiles hope.”

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Romans 15:8-13

Because of its length Psalm 117 doesn’t say very much but what it does say is important; Christ came to bring salvation to Gentiles as well as to Jews.  This truth is repeated many times in the Bible and to make sure we don’t miss it God devoted one psalm exclusively to teaching it.
