The wrong empire
The Bible prophesies a restoration of the Roman Empire just before Christ’s return and many Bible teachers think that the European Union is the fulfillment of that prophecy.
When the EU was formed this belief seemed reasonable. The founding members were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany and these countries are all in territory that was once part of the Roman Empire. But since membership has grown and it now includes nations such as Sweden, Finland, and Poland that were never part of the empire.
Perhaps people who are looking for signs of the restoration of the Roman Empire are looking at the wrong empire.
In 395 the Empire split into two parts. Western Europeans and Americans are more familiar with the western part because it is the source of our culture and one part of it, the Roman Catholic church, still exists. As a result we often overlook the eastern part when studying Bible prophecy.
The western empire collapsed less than 100 years after the split but the eastern empire lasted until Constantinople was conquered by the Turks in 1453 so for over 900 years it was the Roman Empire. Israel and most of the other countries that played a part in the Bible were in the territory that was part of this empire.
Right now the territory is divided up among many different nations and there isn’t any unification movement as there is in Europe but this situation could change quickly. There is a great deal of political instability and this could lead to the emergence of a leader who would try to unite the area under a single government. Such a unification could come about quickly because there are already three ways in which most of the area is already united: Islam is the primary religion, most of the people speak Arabic, and many of them hate Israel. A good leader might be able to exploit these factors to persuade the people to put aside their national differences.
